Shaping the City Together: BECK at “Dolce Città” in Munich

Reused timber components, collaborative building and new ideas for public space: At the participatory “Dolce Città” workshop at Munich’s Rindermarkt, existing materials were transformed into temporary elements designed to enhance the quality of the space and encourage interaction. As a project partner, BECK supported the initiative with LIGNOLOC® wooden nails.

LIGNOLOC® wooden nails CONNECT REUSED MATERIALS

How can existing resources be used to jointly and sustainably develop public spaces? This was the question explored by the “Dialogkiosk / Dolce Città” project, which took place on 15 July 2026 as part of Ruffini Mercato at Munich’s Rindermarkt. At the heart of the event was a collaborative design-build workshop. Reused timber battens, squared timber and other available materials were transformed into mobile add-on elements for the urban space. The concepts included tiered tables, deckchairs, sunshade elements, planters and other temporary street furniture. LIGNOLOC® wooden nails from BECK were used for the timber connections. This innovative fastening technology enables wood-to-wood connections, supporting material-appropriate, resource-efficient and circular construction.

PARTICIPATION MEETS CIRCULAR CONSTRUCTION

“Dolce Città” combines hands-on work with public dialogue. Local residents, creatives, architects and other interested participants were invited to actively contribute to the building process and share their own perspectives on the design of urban spaces. Rather than simply discussing the city, participants were able to explore new ideas directly through physical interventions. The jointly developed elements were designed to create new opportunities for sitting, spending time and meeting others, while demonstrating how existing materials can be transferred into a new use cycle with relatively little effort. The workshop was complemented by discussions on circularity in construction, the use of vacant spaces as a resource and the importance of so-called third places. These are shared spaces that enable encounters, exchange, and social and cultural activities.

TIMBER CONNECTIONS FOR THE NEXT USE CYCLE

Temporary installations and street furniture place particular demands on planning, construction and dismantling. They need to be flexible in use and should be easy to reuse, adapt or disassemble into their individual components after their initial application. LIGNOLOC® supports this approach by enabling metal-free connections within timber structures. This makes the technology suitable not only for conventional timber construction applications, but also for experimental architecture, design and creative projects in which reuse and circularity are considered from the outset. “Dolce Città” demonstrates how innovative fastening technology, reclaimed materials and community engagement can work together. Existing resources are transformed into new objects while also generating fresh momentum for sustainable and vibrant urban development.
